I had the fun opportunity this month to shoot a Canon campaign to launch their new flagship RF 400mm f/2.8 telephoto lens. Canon is releasing a range of high-end new lenses for their mirrorless system, and the RF 400mm lens is amazing!

I had a blast capturing rock climbers with a preproduction version of the lens. It’s a great tool for those situations where getting closer just isn’t an option, and also where I want to create a special look with a compressed background and shallow depth of field.

I was blown away by the image stabilization, which allowed me to capture sharp images even when hand-holding the shots at 1/80th of a second. I rarely need a tripod with this lens and camera, so I can shoot more freely and experiment with different frames — even when hanging on a rope.

As an outdoor director and photographer, I’m always looking for artistic tools that will elevate the look of my imagery. Whether it’s for capturing high-action sports or wildlife, a long lens is a great tool to have in the bag!
