September 9th, 2009

photoplus2009postcard

I am honored to be teaching two seminars at the 2009 Photo Plus Expo on October 22-24 in New York City. My first talk is “Shooting Stock: Creating Exceptional Work & Making Your Ideas Profitable” on Oct. 22 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., and is sponsored by Canon. The lecture will cover my proven methods for getting world-class shots while traveling light and using relatively basic lighting setups. The second seminar is “Real World Lighting, Real Results: Using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 & Photoshop CS4 for Exceptional Travel and Outdoor Photography” on Oct. 23 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., and is sponsored by Adobe. Here I will share my Adobe workflow and processing secrets for outdoor sports, portraiture and travel images, especially when working with variable natural light. I hope to see you at these seminars!

You can also catch me speaking at the Canon booth during the convention, where I will be presenting some of my latest multimedia and photojournalism work with the 5D Mark II cameras, as well as teaching Speedlite seminars; please check back for a schedule — I’ll post one as soon as it’s available. Thank-you to PDN for using my motorcycling image (above) in their campaign to advertise the expo!

Canon staff will provide free gear demos of their latest camera bodies, lenses and speedlites. Please call the studio with questions, 970-963-2462. Space is limited so please register soon. Ethiopia Multimedia Video Launches

June 25th, 2009

_MG_1136_Movie_start_screen_new

I am excited to debut the 7-minute documentary “Land of Hardship, People of Hope” on my Multimedia page. I shot a week-long project revealing Ethiopia’s orphan crisis and the work that an amazing nonprofit agency is doing to revitalize some of the hardest-hit communities. The presentation, captured with Canon EOS 5D Mark II video and stills cameras, combines HD video, stills and sound, as well as beautiful Ethiopian music. I had the honor of working with the kind people at Crispin Porter + Bogusky ad agency, who edited and produced the video pro bono.

I am also selling select images from my travels in Ethiopia to raise money for Wide Horizons for Children’s Ethiopian humanitarian-aid program. 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of these prints will go to this outstanding nonprofit agency. Click here to see the online gallery.

Canon Workshop in Aspen

June 17th, 2009

IMG_4366_MG_4549

A few shots from the Canon workshop in Aspen on June 6-7! (Photos courtesy of Erika Silverstein at Canon.) We had a great class, shooting at the beautiful Maroon Bells, which was a mix of snow squalls and bright sun. Canon provided gear demos galore (even a few telephoto lenses I hadn’t tried before), and most importantly everyone learned a lot. I am excited to be leading another workshop with Canon on Sept. 26-27 during Aspen’s stunning peak-foliage weekend, when the aspen leaves blaze yellow and orange. Enrollment details to come shortly!

Patagonia’s “Summer Favorites” catalog just published and includes four portraits I shot this spring of environmentalists who are part of Patagonia’s Freedom to Roam campaign. Above are two of the clips. The portrait on the left is of Rick Ridgeway, Patagonia’s VP of Environmental Initiatives, in Ojai, CA. The portrait on the right is of Louisa Willcox of the Natural Resources Defense Council, in Livingston, MT. It was great to travel to the beautiful regions of California, Nevada and Montana to photograph these kind people in their hometowns! Many thanks to Tim Davis for the art direction and inspiration.

Ethiopian Nonprofit Benefit

May 19th, 2009

Wide Horizons for Children Benefit

On Thursday May 21 I am honored to be hosting a benefit and video launch party for the Ethiopian child-welfare agency Wide Horizons For Children. The event starts at 6 p.m. at the Penn Club in NYC. Ethiopia faces a poverty and healthcare crisis that has orphaned over 5 million children; Wide Horizons is bringing life-changing projects to people in some of the poorest communities. This winter, I shot a volunteer documentary for the nonprofit agency that combines photo stills and HD video from Canon’s 5D Mark II cameras; the award-winning advertising agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky generously provided pro-bono video editing and production services. It would be a pleasure to see you there!
